What to wear for your photoshoot

Styling tips for Timeless, Beautiful Images

One of the most common questions I get asked before a session is: “What should we wear?” And honestly, it's such an important one! The outfits you choose play a huge role in how your final gallery looks and feels. My editing style is soft, light, airy, and warm — think creamy tones and golden glow — and your clothing choices can either complement or compete with that look. So let’s talk about how to create the most dreamy, cohesive photos that you’ll love for years to come.

Start with Mom

Always, always style mom first. When she feels beautiful, the whole vibe of the session shifts — and trust me, it shows in the photos. Flowy dresses, soft textures, and natural tones photograph beautifully and add movement and romance to your images. Earthy colors like sage, cream, taupe, soft rust, and muted blushes work especially well with my editing style and the natural environments I love to shoot in.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone in the same white shirt and jeans. Instead, think about coordinating tones and textures. Mix soft knits, linen, subtle patterns, and delicate embroidery. Layers can add interest too — a cardigan, a vest, a scarf — just keep everything within a complementary color palette.

Avoid loud prints, large logos, neon or bold primary colors, and especially dark blue jeans. These tend to distract from the emotion and connection in the images, and they don’t edit well with my creamy, light tones.

Accessories Matter (Even Shoes!)

Details matter! Accessories like dainty necklaces, textured headbands for little girls, or a stylish hat for dad can bring a whole outfit together. And don’t forget the shoes — they’ll show more than you think, especially in full-length shots. Bare feet can even work for beach or in-home sessions, but if you’re wearing shoes, go for neutral tones, avoid bright sneakers, and lean into casual, comfortable styles that match the overall look.

Dressing the Rest of the Family

Once mom’s outfit is set, build around her. Choose soft, coordinating tones for everyone else — not matching, but complementary. Neutral chinos or linen pants work well for dads and boys. Flowy dresses or rompers are beautiful for little girls, especially when paired with simple accessories like a bow or a sun hat.

Final Tips

Lay all the outfits out together to see how they look side-by-side.

Avoid bringing phones or bulky keys in your pockets.

When in doubt, send me your ideas! I’m always happy to give feedback.

Remember, your photos are about capturing connection — not clothes — but choosing the right outfits will elevate your images and bring out all the warmth and emotion we’re aiming for.
